Delhi Capitals produced a clinical effort on the field on Friday to beat Chennai Super Kings by 44 runs in Match 7 of the Indian Premier League in Dubai. The win took DC to the top of the IPL 2020 points table after the second successive triumph in as many games.
Chasing 176 for victory, CSK were behind the asking rate from the word go as Shane Watson and Murali Vijay failed to provide a good start for the yellow brigade.
The duo managed just 23 runs in 4 overs before Watson got out to Axar Patel in the fifth over. Vijay followed him to the dressing room an over later.
It was once again Faf du Plessis who waged a lone battle for CSK. He got some support from Kedar Jadhav (26) and MS Dhoni (15) in the middle order but their failure to keep up with the asking rate resulted in their downfall in the match. CSK eventually managed to score just 131 for 7 in 20 overs. (CSK vs DC Live Score, IPL 2020)
Du Plessis ended up scoring 43 from 35 balls and also completed 2000 IPL runs in the process. He became the 4th South African to achieve the feat and 33rd overall in the league.
Kagiso Rabada was Delhi’s best bowler in the match as he grabbed 3 for 26 while Anrich Nortje took 2 wickets and Axar Patel took 1. But it was the combined effort of all their bowlers which saw CSK struggle to score freely throughout their run chase.
Earlier, DC posted 175 for 3 on the board in their allotted 20 overs after Dhoni won the toss and opted to bowl first.
Opener Prithvi Shaw made the difference for Delhi, scoring 64 off 43 balls with the help of 9 fours and a six while Rishabh Pant (37 not out), Shikhar Dhawan (35) and Shreyas Iyer (26) also made useful contributions.
Shaw and Dhawan were part of a 94-run opening partnership which probably was the biggest difference between the two sides.
Shaw’s fifty was his 5th in the IPL, taking him 2nd on the list of batsmen with most 50-plus scores before the age of 21. The list is headed by Rishabh Pant, who has 9 fifties in his IPL career so far. Piyush Chawla (2 for 33) and Sam Curran (1 for 27) were the only two wicket-takers CSK.
DC now sit on top of the IPL 2020 table with 4 points from 2 matches while CSK have dropped down to 5th courtesy their 2nd successive loss.
